2 movements that follow each other, not to be confused

Art Nouveau dominates the late 19th century and the early 20th, until around 1910. Art Deco succeeds it in the 1920s and remains the reference until the mid-1930s. Both appear on vintage posters, but their visual vocabulary is very different.

Lines: curves versus geometry

Art Nouveau draws on plant forms: stems, flowers, flowing hair, lines that wind without a sharp angle. Art Deco reverses the logic with straight lines, bold angles, perfect circles and patterns repeated in symmetry.

Colors and materials

Art Nouveau often stays within natural, muted shades: sage green, ochre, brown, subtle gold. Art Deco embraces bolder contrasts, with black, gold and silver, and saturated colors laid down in crisp flat areas.

How to recognize them on a poster

When looking at a poster, start with the frame or border: a border that undulates like a vine signals Art Nouveau, while a border made of straight lines and chevrons signals Art Deco. The same reflex works with typography: stretched, fluid letters on one side, thick, geometric letters on the other.

Style goes beyond paper: furniture and architecture

Art Deco isn’t only about posters: the poster of the antique carved wooden bed, a canopy bed with straight posts in a sunlit bedroom, shows this taste for clean lines on a piece of furniture, and the poster of the Palais de Chaillot and the Trocadéro fountains shows the same vocabulary in 1930s architecture, with its straight wings and perfect symmetry.

A rural scene that belongs to neither style

The poster of the woman harvesting wheat, in landscape orientation, shows a farming scene treated in simple flat areas, without the curves of Art Nouveau or the geometry of Art Deco: a reminder that the catalog isn’t limited to these 2 movements.

A 3rd register, even older than the 2

The poster of the world map with 2 hemispheres surrounded by cherubs draws on an even older style, that of Baroque maps with scrolls, predating both Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

Check the style rather than trusting the collection name

When looking at a poster in the catalog, it’s better to apply the criteria given above (lines, colors, border, typography) than to assume a style from a collection name alone: the catalog mixes Art Nouveau, Art Deco and older registers such as the harvest or cartography.

Pair furniture and architecture on the same wall

For an Art Deco wall that shows the style beyond paper, pairing the antique carved wooden bed with the Palais de Chaillot varies the subjects (furniture, architecture) without leaving the same vocabulary of lines and angles.

Frequently asked questions

You often ask us

Is Mucha Art Nouveau or Art Deco?

Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) is one of the names most associated with Art Nouveau, with his female figures with flowing hair and plant-inspired frames.

Can you mix the 2 styles on the same wall?

Yes, as long as you keep the colors consistent across the posters you choose. The contrast of styles, curves and geometry, can work if the palette stays close.
